The International Oral History Association seeks your support to advance and promote the work of oral history, worldwide.
I am writing to you to request your assistance for the important IOHA Scholarships Fund. Since 1996, IOHA has filled an important void providing a forum for oral historians around the world, and a means for cooperation among those concerned with the documentation of human experience. This mission takes form most substantially in a conference that allows oral historians to come together to share their research, discuss methods, learn from master workshops and simply unite with colleagues. We want to make this opportunity available to as many deserving historians as possible providing funding for those who have important contributions to make but cannot get adequate institutional support to participate otherwise.
In 2008, the Scholarships Committee enabled 13 people to participate in the IOHA conference in Guadalajara, Mexico who would not have been able to come otherwise. In selecting recipients, we consider the merits of their work but also are concerned with the barriers to international travel caused by ailing economies, unfavorable monetary exchange rates, and the problems independent scholars face in finding institutional support. Providing conference scholarships is an important way that IOHA honors its commitment to creating a forum for diverse voices from every corner of the Earth and fostering a better understanding of the democratic nature and value of oral history worldwide.
Your donation can make a significant impact! Since 2002, contributions from individual IOHA members have helped enable conference participation by historians from Oceania, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. A contribution of even 40 € can provide a night’s accommodations; 600 € can fund conference fees, lodging and food for a deserving colleague. In these economic times-- when other sources of funding are ever more difficult to find-- every contribution can make a real difference.
Thank you and best regards,
Calinda N. Lee, Ph.D.
